Should Carlos Return to Rogue?

Last night's show, in my opinion, was the best of three performance in terms of what I and the audience brought. It wasn't a sold-out performance, but it was pretty close. There were a couple of times when I received applause and felt like telling them to stop so I could continue. (Of course, it's not that I don't like applause, but I only had so much time to get through so much.)

The following is a posting that was back on Thursday, March 5th by Stephanie in relation to my show (http://roguefestival.com/rogue09/?p=162): "This show is a must see!! It was very creative, funny, and well performed!! Confessions Of A Karaoke DJ was very entertaining and will keep you on the edge of your seat laughing!! This was one of the most well performed show of the rouge that I have seen!! This Karaoke DJ is also very easy on the eyes as well!!"

There was also a comment posted on the Fresno Famous website back on Friday, March 6th (http://www.fresnofamous.com/content/2009-rogue-festival-confessions-karaoke-dj): "Once we were convinced there is such a thing--and there would have to be , no? I suppose we need to get out more--we found Greg Ramirez's performance well choreographed and insightful. The 45 minutes flew by! He performed in front of a large photo of a female nude and still managed to keep our attention!"

Of course, if you visit the Rogue Festival website, you will spot one negative posting. I won't put it up here, as it's almost unheard of for any film or work of art including negative reviews as part of their publicity. All I will say is that everyone is entitled to his or her opinion of the show.

Overall, I had fun performing as part of this year's Rogue Festival. This year's show was a far cry from anything I had done in the past. I am a poet, and while I have done readings and even some minor acting, I have never done a solo performance where I am carrying the entire show for as long as I did. I had some people tell me how the 45 minutes flew by, and I also had to assure others that I have never been a karaoke DJ. (As I've told some people, some of this show is based on personal experiences my wife and I have seen at karaoke bars, on the personal experiences of others, and on pure fabrication. I will leave it to you to figure out which parts were which.)

While I am eager to perform in next year's Rogue Festival, something I have been debating is whether or not Carlos should return. For me, this is the equivalent of the Norman Gentle character that the American Idol contestant created during this season or even the Borat character that Sasha Baron Cohen portrayed.

Even though sequels usually don't live up to the original, one thing I've noticed about the Rogue Festival is that it is not uncommon for certain performers to repeat their show year after year. Additionally, while those who attend next year's festival might remember Confessions of a Karaoke DJ, a good number of those who attend won't. In some cases, those who wanted to catch the show this year but couldn't for whatever reason might be happy at another chance to catch it next year. (This was the case for my wife and I, as we caught Abigail Nolte perform last night and loved it.)

If anyone out there who saw the show has any suggestions about whether or not Carlos should return, by all means, please leave comments or get in touch with me to let me know. My e-mail address is gregory.ramirez@yahoo.com. If he ought to return in some other capacity, that might be worth considering as well.

Again, to everyone who came out to the show, thank you, and I hope you enjoyed it.

Two Down, One More to Go . . .

Wednesday's performance went well. While I don't think there were as many people as there were for last Friday's performance, there was still a good amount of people there. I saw many familiar faces of colleagues attend the performance. I'm thinking that it was a combination of being a weekday as well as midweek. (Even I might have been tired from the week.)

There is one more show on Saturday, March 7th at 6:15 p.m. in the Spectrum Art Gallery (608 E. Olive, Fresno, CA 93728). Tickets are $3, and late comers are accepted up to 15 minutes into the show. Remember: if you know where The Revue and Piemonte's Deli is, the venue where I am performing is right next to those businesses.

One piece of advice: I hear that the last Friday and Saturday of the festival tend to see the highest attendance for performances, so it might be a good idea to get there as early as possible. Tickets go on sale half an hour prior to the start of the show.

Again, I thank everyone who has come out so far. If you are planning on going, I hope to see you at Saturday's performance. Don't forget to post comments about the show at the Rogue Festival website so others can know what your thoughts are of the show.

Themes to Ponder

This could be the English instructor in me, but I thought I would write a posting including certain themes that are in the performance that might be worthwhile discussion afterwards. Knowing that several of my colleagues plan on attending, I figure this could give them something to discuss as they ponder what was going on in the show.

This is also rather "postmodern" of me, as I remember some of the novels in the American Postmodern Fiction course I took as a graduate student at Fresno State as having notes the author provides relating to the novel.

I will do my best not to spoil any key details in the show. However, if you haven't seen the show yet, you might want to skip over this posting:

Addiction. Think about what Carlos says specifically about Sarah, the regular who frequently follows him in the rotation.

Religion. Think about what Carlos says about what he could do if he weren't a karaoke DJ as well as what he shares about hearing those whose renditions of Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison give the artists justice. Don't forget, too: Carlos is "confessing."

Sex. Think about the stories Carlos shares about the behavior of certain regulars along with the lyrics to the songs they sing. Remember one thing Carlos says early on: for many of the regulars, doing karaoke allows them to have a social life.

Truth. This might not be apparent at first, but one of the first things the DJ says is this: "Me llamo Carlos." Could this in any way be a reference to Herman Melville's Moby Dick when the narrator says, "Call me Ishmael"? A question to ask is whether or not we should even trust everything Carlos tells us. Additionally, remember that, at a karaoke bar, you hear people singing familiar songs, but you're not likely to hear the original artists deliver those songs.

Another Performance Tonight

I have another performance tonight of "Confessions of a Karaoke DJ" at the Spectrum Gallery (608 E. Olive) that starts at 7:30 p.m. Don't forget that the show is $3. I had fun performing it back on Friday, and I look forward to doing it again this evening.

I'm not sure if I mentioned this, but doing this solo performance has really been a stretch for me. I have done some minor acting, such as home movies made with friends along with a small part as a correctional officer in a student-produced prison film titled Concrete Beach back when I attended CSU Fresno. However, I have never done a solo performance nor have I ever portrayed a character anywhere like Carlos.

Again, I want to thank those who have come out to support my show, from colleagues and friends to complete strangers who found out about my show through the Rogue Map, the Rogue Festival website, and wherever else.

Before I head out, here is another review that was posted last night on the Rogue Festival website (http://roguefestival.com/rogue09/?p=162):

"I thought Confessions of a Karaoke DJ was pretty funny. I think people should definately go and see it. I really didn’t expect this to come out of my teacher, I think thats the funny part about it but it was a good show and I think people would enjoy going to this show to have a few laughs." --Katrina Ross

Some More Reviews

Here are a couple of reviews via the Rogue Festival website (http://roguefestival.com/rogue09/?p=162):

Review of the Show from the Rogue Festival Website

The following is a review of "Confessions of a Karaoke DJ" that was posted by Scott Eddy back on Saturday morning from the Rogue Festival website:

"Interesting collection of what goes on behind the senes of a ‘Karaoke DJ’. As a DJ myself I found this venue to be entertaing and familiar. For all you karaoke fans in the valley I encourage you to attend this event, You just might find out how things really work and have a greater appreciation of the stuff dj’s have to put up with. In eithier case, you will stop asking the dj “Am I up next..10 times a night!"

If you've seen the show, please don't be shy to post your reviews at http://roguefestival.com/rogue09/?p=162.

One Down, Two More to Go

Last night's performance went well. It looked like a good crowd, but you'll have to forgive me if I can't give an exact head count. After all, you must remember: Carlos is the one confessing to the audience for 45 minutes, and not me. I'd like to thank everyone who showed for opening night.

I think the listing as one of the Festival's "5 That Sound Cool" in yesterday's The Fresno Bee definitely gave the show some exposure. I've been happy with the attention the show has been getting. Don't forget that there are still two chances to catch the show, which will be on Wednesday, March 4th at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, March 7th at 6:15 p.m. at the Spectrum Art Gallery at 608 E. Olive, Fresno, CA 93728.

I need to give thanks to the following people who have helped me in some way or the other with promoting my show:

-to Community Alliance, The Madera Tribune, and The Fresno Bee for publishing information regarding my show;

-to Aileen and Tony Imperatrice for allowing me at the last minute to give a teaser at Ashtree Studios (1035 N. Fulton, Fresno, CA 93728) as part of Rogue Hop back on Thursday, February 26th. Don't forget, check out Aileen's artwork at Ashtree Studios and get a chance to "Meet the Artist" on Sunday, March 1st at 2:30 p.m. and Friday, March 6th at 6:15 p.m. Additionally, don't forget about Tony Imperatrice's "My Big Organ Show," which has showings at Ashtree Studios on Friday, March 6th at 8:45 p.m. and Saturday, March 7th at 2:30 p.m.;

-to Veni Vidi Vici's (1116 N. Fulton, Fresno, CA 93728) for allowing me to me to give a teaser back on Thursday;

-to Spectrum Gallery (608 E. Olive) for being a cafe venue as part of the Rogue Festival, and to Bruce and Brad (the venue managers) for their help with my show and other shows that are taking place there;

-to the following Tower District establishments for allowing me to distribute fliers for my show: Irene's Cafe (747 E. Olive), The Revue Cafe (620 E. Olive), Spectrum Art Gallery (608 E. Olive), Ashtree Studios (1035 N. Fulton), Palomino's (805 E. Olive), The Tower Theater (815 E. Olive), Piemonte's Deli (616 E. Olive), and Bobby Salazar's (725 E. Olive).

-to the faculty, staff, and students at the Madera Community College Center for their interest in and support of my artistic endeavors. Specifically, I'd like to thank Jay Leech, my friend and colleague, for his help with the promo videos that have been part of generating interest in the show;

-to the Rogue Festival coordinators in general for allowing me to perform and share my talents
with others;

-and, most of all, to my wife Stephanie for her constant support in all that I do and, for this show in particular, for your suggestions, your help with my show's props, and your taking a photo that has unexpectedly played a big part in getting exposure for the show.

Tonight's Opening Night . . .

Tonight is the first showing of "Confessions of a Karaoke DJ." Again, it will be at the Spectrum Gallery (608 E. Olive, Fresno, CA 93728), and it will start at 7:30 p.m. If you are familiar with the Tower District, the Spectrum Gallery is next door to Piemonte's Deli, which in turn is next door to The Revue cofee house.

Last night, the Rogue Hop went on, which allowed the various Rogue Festival performers to give teasers for their shows. I did just that at two different venues. Due to cancellations from a couple of other performers, I was able to share information along with a segment of my show at Ashtree Studios (1035 N. Fulton St.) at about 6:20 or 6:30. (I forget the exact time.) I also gave a teaser at Veni Vidi Vici (1116 N. Fulton St.) on their patio at about 6:50 p.m. Hopefully my teasers generated interest from those in attendance.

Even if you do not get to see my show, I encourage all of you to see any of the shows that will be part of the Rogue Festival. Keep in mind, however, that some shows have material that may not be suitable for all viewers, so be sure to check the Rogue Map and the Rogue Festival website for ratings and information. (My show is Rated PG-13, so keep that in mind.)

My Show Has Gotten Press

Back on Wednesday, February 25th, The Madera Tribune mentioned my show on the front page along with an artist from Madera whose work will be showcased as part of the Rogue Festival.

I just found out that my show is mentioned in today's edition of The Fresno Bee. My picture (which you can see is the first posting on this website)is on the front page along with other Rogue Festival performers.

In the entertainment section, my shows is mentioned as one that sounds interesting. If you wish to read it, click on the following link: http://www.fresnobee.com/entertainment/story/1226014.html

News from North Carolina

I just received word that three of my poems will be published in the 2009 issue of The Broad River Review, the literary journal for Gardner-Webb University (Boiling Springs, NC). Last year, two of my poems were published in that journal, so I am incredibly excited to be published yet again.

A Few Resources for the Uninitiated

For any of your novices to the karaoke scene, there is a place online where you can hear people doing renditions of your favorite songs. If interested, visit http://www.singsnap.com/

There is also a magazine that deals with the karaoke scene throughout the world. Guess what the name of the magazine is? You guessed it: Karaoke Scene! If you'd like to check it out, visit http://www.karaokescene.com/

Finally, the only film I have seen and know about that focuses heavily on karaoke is a film titled Duets. This film stars Huey Lewis, Gwenyth Paltrow, Paul Giamatti, Andre Braugher, Maria Bello, and Scott Speedman. If you've ever heard Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin'" covered by a man and a woman on the radio, you have this film to thank. (You should be able to rent it at any Blockbuster or Hollywood Video.)

One More Week to Go . . .

Well, there is only one more week until the Rogue Festival begins. One week from today will be the first chance to catch "Confessions of a Karaoke DJ."

Don't forget that Rogue Hop will be going on next Thursday at Veni Vidi Vici. You can catch a glimpse of my show along with others as the performers give ten-minute samplings.

I should also point out that the Rogue Maps are available. For those of you wondering what I'm talking about, a Rogue Map is a booklet containing information about the various shows and artists who will be participating in this event. There is even a grid on the back pages that is similar to a TV Guide, showing you what is being performed along with when and where. This is especially helpful if there are two shows you'd like to see yet are going on simultaneously.

If you visit The Fresno Beehive online, you will see various fliers of Rogue Festival shows under Mike Osegueda's blog. The link is http://www.fresnobeehive.com/archives/2009/02/post_no_bills_r.html

Dream of Scheherazade
This is a belly dancing performance that is put on by the Ananka Dance Company. There will be four chances to catch it at Diana's North (826 N. Fulton). The cost is $7. For more information, check out http://www.ananka.com

well,
i really enjoyed the poem along with the jazz music.
i find the poetry about sitting alone very fascinating. it takes a lot to just try and make friend with a past history together. i really enjoyed the decription of gregory ramirez’s poem about 9/10. i remember sitting in class and my whole class was about about 9/11. the whole theme of the music with the poetry was very moving.

The show was very entertaining. The combination of having the singer (your wife the Siren) do her part in the play brings out a huge background of life. Her choices of songs were beautiful. I really enjoyed the poems you wrote for her as well.

The Rogue Website and Rogue Hop

You can access include information about this year's Rogue Festival and the other shows that will be a part of it (including mine). Be sure to visit http://roguefestival.com/rogue09/.

I should point out that they are updating the content on it, so information may change from day to day.

If, after seeing the website, you become even more stumped about which shows to see, there is something called Rogue Hop that will take place on the first day of the festival, which is on Thursday, February 26th. As far as I know, there will be "teasers" where performers will speak and/or give a sampling of their show for a maximum of ten minutes. It will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m., and I will be doing it at approximately 6:50 p.m., but I should note that the time is subject to change.

The teasers will be at Veni Vidi Vici's, which is at 1116 N. Fulton (across the street from the Babylon parking lot). There will also be teasers at Ashtree Studios, which is at 1035 N. Fulton, Fresno, CA 93728. (I'll be at Veni Vidi Vici's.)

Definition of "Postmodernism"

The following is a definition of "postmodernism," according to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) online, which is a word that may have some relevance to the upcoming show:

[< POST- prefix + MODERNISM n. Compare POSTMODERNIST n. and later POSTMODERN adj.]

The state, condition, or period subsequent to that which is modern; spec. in architecture, the arts, literature, politics, etc., any of various styles, concepts, or points of view involving a conscious departure from modernism, esp. when characterized by a rejection of ideology and theory in favour of a plurality of values and techniques. Also in extended use in general contexts, freq. used ironically.
Typical features of late 20th cent. postmodernism include references to, or the use of, earlier styles and conventions, a deliberate mixing of different styles and media (often with self-referential or parodic intent) and the incorporation of images relating to consumerism, mass-communication, etc.

1914 J. M. THOMPSON in Hibbert Jrnl. July 744 The raison d'etre of Post-Modernism is to escape from the double-mindedness of Modernism by being thorough in its criticismby extending it to religion as well as theology, to Catholic feeling as well as to Catholic tradition. 1926 B. Definition of "Mondegreen"

You learn something new each day. The following is information from the Oxford English Dictionary about the word "mondegreen," a word I learned thanks to Dan Rivera (an educational advisor at the Madera Community College Center) that is applicable to karaoke:

Brit. /mndgrin/, U.S. /mndgrin/
A misunderstood or misinterpreted word or phrase resulting from a mishearing, esp. of the lyrics to a song.
1954 S. WRIGHT in Harper's Mag. Nov. 49/1 The point about what I shall hereafter call mondegreens, since no one else has thought up a word for them, is that they are better than the original. 1957 Harper's Mag. Dec. 6/3 When I saw Sylvia Wright's lead paragraph on ompremity (October) I was afraid your penetrating exposer of mondegreens had lighted on it. 1979 W. SAFIRE in N.Y. Times Mag. 27 May 14/2 Thanks to responsive readers, I have a column on sound defects and a whole closetful of mondegreens. 1994 S. PINKER Lang. Instinct vi. 186 The interesting thing about mondegreens is that the mis-hearings are generally less plausible than the intended lyrics.

Definition of Karaoke

The following is the definition for the word "karaoke" along with some information about the word [taken from the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) Online]:

(karaoke, anglicized kærk, kærk) [Jap., f. kara empty, void + ke(sutora (f. Eng. orchestra).]

A form of entertainment, originating in Japan, in which a person sings the vocal line of a popular song to the accompaniment of a pre-recorded backing tape, and the voice is electronically amplified through the loudspeaker system for the audience; also, the audio (and video) equipment used for this. Freq. attrib., esp. as karaoke bar, music.

1979 Sunday Mail (Brisbane) 23 Sept. 33/1 The ‘Karaoke’ (literally ‘empty orchestra’) bars are popular with Japanese office workers. 1982 Japan Times 11 July 10/3 The Japanese consumer electronics industry is now cashing in on the sing-it-yourself boom... The Electronics Industries Association of Japan has no official production or sales data on karaoke equipment. 1983 McAllen (Texas) Monitor 30 Oct. 8C/1 Karaoke music is recorded on cassette, 8-track tape, laser video disc and compact digital disc... The rock scorings closely duplicate the original hit recordings, with just the vocal missing. 1985 RANDLE & WATANABE Coping with Japan 58 Karaoke songs are usually lyrical and sentimental. 1987 Daily Tel. 30 Mar. 17/7 Karaoke is important as a ‘lubricant for human relationships within the company’. 1990 Independent 24 Apr. 27/8 The brewers are now introducing Karaoke into selected pubs on a trial basis. 1992 Premiere Jan. 59/3 (Advt.), This new combi player plays hundreds of karaoke music video song titles, hits from the '50s through the '80s, all with on-screen lyrics.

What is the Rogue Festival?

Some of you who I may have told about the Rogue Festival might be wondering what it is exactly. Every year in Fresno's Tower District around late February to early March, there are various performances that include (though not limited to) live bands, dance routines, and one-act plays.

Typically referred to as fringe festivals throughout the rest of the country and the world, I believe this is the eighth Rogue Festival here in Fresno, and it has become the largest one of its kind on the West coast.

The first time I ever heard about it, I believe, was in 2003, when poet/friend Tim Z. Hernandez told me about his one-man show, Skin Tax: Diaries of a Macho. I didn't get to see it, which is unfortunate, as I heard it won an award for Best Solo Performance.

However, I did see a performance in 2007. I forget the gentleman's name, but the name of the show was Are Ya Dating? It was a rather humorous solo performance about a man's experiences in the dating world.

Earlier this year, my wife Stephanie and I did a performance where she sang jazz covers and I read some of my poetry to music. It was originally titled "A Siren Sings, a Postmodern Psalmist Speaks," though we condensed the title to "The Siren and the Postmodern Psalmist." (Our website is still accessible at http://sirenpsalmist.blogspot.com.)

This year, I will be doing a solo performance relating to the karaoke scene. Hopefully you will find it amusing and let others know about it. Please be sure to check back here regularly for new information relating to the show and the Rogue Festival in general.

Confessions of a Karaoke DJ

The first in his “Things to Do in the Central Valley” trilogy, local poet Gregory Ramirez plays Carlos, a DJ whose anecdotes of wild Friday night patrons may make you laugh, sing along, and even help fill his tip jar.
Rating: PG-13 (Depends on what he has to confess)
Cost: $3
